Posted 8/30/12, Updated 9/4/12

Jondra Darden, APCA School Membership Coordinator presents check to Project Storehouse.

The Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA) got involved with The Lord’s Child and Project Storehouse at the Walmart in Sevierville and Knoxville at Knoxville Center and Turkey Creek. Between 5-9 P.M. 8/29- 8/31 they loaded food, water, and supplies for Hurricane Isaac victims.

The Sevierville non-profit organization, The Lord’s Child hosted the event.  They collected a number of non-perishables to be delivered to those who have been impacted by the hurricane.

The APCA’s Executive Director, Eric Lambert is from the affected area.  He strongly encourages all those who can to help in any way.  The APCA donated a check to support these efforts on Friday, August 31 at the Walmart in Sevierville, TN on 1414 Parkway.

I was able to go down and help out at Project Storehouse this past weekend. The amount of goods being delivered and the help from local volunteers were amazing!
Check out this video of The APCA helping out at the Turkey Creek Walmart.

Project Storehouse will have these items delivered to the area soon. Please stay tuned for more details on where these items can be retrieved. If you are aware of students or advisors impacted by the storms, please contact the APCA.

Jessica enjoys spending time with her family - her husband, Eric Lambert, and their three amazing kids: Kelly (14), Zachary (12), and Margaret (8). In her spare time, Jess enjoys gardening, shopping, swimming, and giving back to her community and various charities.

He loves spending time with his amazing wife, Darcy doing anything and/or nothing.  They are expecting their first baby boy in the fall. He enjoys wakeboarding, hanging out with friends, sports, and playing board games or video games. He likes working with the APCA because of the fun, unique, and engaging people. He enjoys the satisfaction of putting together large events with a small staff. His favorite thing is seeing new people make a career out of college events and programs. Something interesting about Phil is that he had stitches three different times as a kid, all on his face!
Jennifer Haun is the Midwest and Southeast Regional School Membership Coordinator. She has been with the APCA for a year and a half. Her favorite thing about her job includes the friendly and fun atmosphere and the teamwork that is displayed to reach success. She is a Gold & Platinum Grammy-award winning songwriter and has written for the legendary Ray Charles, John Legend, The Temptations, Steve Winwood and En Vogue to name a few. At UT, Jondra was the President of the Diversity Student Leaders Society and worked with the Athletics and Admissions Departments. Her favorite things about working with the APCA are meeting new people, the opportunities to travel, and seeing how conferences inspire students and advisors to make a difference on their campus and within their communities through programming. Her hobbies include choreographing, being with friends and family, and watching basketball. Something interesting about Jondra is she competed around the country with a baton twirling team until she went to college. Her motto is Love to Live!

Service Through APCA

APCA provides students and advisors a chance to get involved by promoting the importance of service through our service projects offered at APCA conferences and events throughout the year.  Not only are our participants given the opportunity to volunteer on-site at our events, there are also a number of activities they can take back to their campuses to encourage service within their organization or during an event they host.

At our recent Student Life Advisor’s Institute and Student Leadership Workshop in New York City, Dave Kelly, notable college speaker known as “America's Student Leadership Trainer” provided activities to promote student involvement and awareness of a variety of opportunities that can be practiced throughout the year.  Our conference attendees were able to make 195 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in thirty-five minutes, 78 teacher survival kits, and a number of flashcards and encouraging letters to elementary students among many other things! We were excited about everything we accomplished and the satisfaction gained from producing projects that will help benefit others.

During the conference, I took some time to create three encouraging notes for elementary students.  I took a trip down memory lane and reflected on the sayings and drawings that were so meaningful to me at that age and employed them in my creations.  It felt good knowing I would be able to brighten a young student’s day with a few, simple words. It was nice to observe students, advisors, and APCA staff give their time to do something for someone else.

The APCA strongly believes students will build character from participating in service.  Also, by participating in service activities, students will be able to gain an appreciation for caring for others and motivating more people to get involved, whether in a big or small way. The smallest act can make the biggest difference!

You can follow Dave Kelly on Twitter @DaveGonzoKelly for more service project ideas and more information. He can also be reached at 770-552-6592.

APCA Social Media Award Winner - Sierra Hutton

This year at the APCA 7th annual Student Life Advisors Institute and Student Leadership Workshop the APCA staff offered conference participants the opportunity to participate in a social media contest. The person who employed all aspects of social networking throughout the conference would be in the running for the APCA Social Media Award. The winner this year was Sierra Jane Hutton from the University of Findlay, where Sharinda Welton-Peeler is her advisor. Sierra is a sophomore in Sport and Event Management and her minor is Graphic Design. When asked what inspired her to join her organization, Sierra said, “I changed my major half way through my freshman year and I wanted to be in a club that would give me experience towards my future profession. The Campus Program Board seemed to be the best choice. After I joined, I realized what a great decision it was since I am getting the experience I need-plus so much more! On campus, Sierra is also a student employee at the Cardio Center and an intern with the Findlay Athletic Department. After college she hopes to move south and find a job at a university working as a Women's Sports Administrator or an Assistant Athletic Director. Other future plans include becoming a wedding/ event planner either in the south or New York! In regards to the APCA 7th Annual Student Life Advisors Institute and Student Leadership Workshop, here is what Sierra had to say, “I really learned how to plan with purpose and to leave my mark. I feel like I am honestly ready to start planning events that my fellow peers will not only want to really come to, but also remember long after the event is over.” The APCA would like to thank Sierra for her support and participation. We know she and all of our APCA participants have a bright future ahead of them! We encourage everyone who attended our NYC Workshop to remember to “live like there’s no day but today!”

Sierra is pictured above on the right with Lauren who also serves on the Campus Program Board. Below is a picture of the University of Findlay Campus Program Board with their advisor, Sharinda Welton-Peeler.
